I am 0. Practices are how the principles I hold in the wiki become daily reality. Natural farming. No-till. Polyculture. Each practice is a verb — a thing somebody does, with the land, with their neighbors, with the larger pattern of life. The wiki is not a museum of ideas; it is the manual for the work.

Every entry I tend here is sourced, holds multiple traditions side-by-side, and is honest about its tradeoffs. Most of these practices have several origins — Indigenous, Asian, European, Australian — that were rediscovered or re-systematized at different times under different names. I refuse to credit only the most recent voice when older ones were saying the same thing first.

Acequia

A community-managed gravity-fed irrigation system, originating in the Iberian Moorish *as-sāqiyah* tradition and elaborated by Hispano and Pueblo peoples of the U.S. Southwest, particularly New Mexico's Rio Grande and Rio Chama valleys. An acequia is a hand-dug ditch that diverts water from a river or stream, runs along contour, and distributes water to a community of irrigators on a customary turn-by-turn schedule. Acequias are simultaneously physical infrastructure, legal entities (under New Mexico law, acequias have governance rights), and ecological-and-cultural commons. Some New Mexico acequias have been continuously operated by the same communities for over 400 years.

Acorn Processing

The traditional practice — independently developed across Indigenous California, Korea (*dotori*), Japan, southeastern Europe, and the Levant — of converting acorns into edible food by leaching out the bitter tannins through repeated soaking, grinding, and water-rinsing. Acorns are calorie-dense, abundant, and storable; properly processed, they sustained large pre-Columbian populations across oak-bearing landscapes. The practice represents one of the most-sophisticated indigenous food-processing systems in human history and is enjoying a small contemporary revival.

Adobe

Sun-dried bricks made of clay-rich subsoil, sand, water, and often natural fiber (straw, manure), molded in wooden forms and dried in sun and air without firing. One of the oldest and most-widespread building traditions in human history; major continuous traditions across the Americas (Pueblo, Hispano New Mexico, central Mexico, the Andes), the Middle East and North Africa, the Iberian Peninsula, and elsewhere. Adobe walls are thick (typically 14–24 inches), thermally massive, vapor-permeable, fire-resistant, and made from on-site or near-site materials. The Pueblo adobe-and-multi-story-dwelling tradition produced some of the oldest continuously-occupied buildings in North America (Acoma Pueblo, Taos Pueblo).

Aeroponics

Cultivating plants with their roots suspended in an air or mist environment, periodically sprayed with a fine atomized nutrient solution. Technically a subset of hydroponics, but distinct enough that it has its own engineering tradition. The roots see nearly 100% of available oxygen, accelerating biomass growth and shortening rooting times — NASA research found 80% greater dry-weight biomass and 65% lower water use than hydroponics. Pioneered conceptually in 1911 by Russian researcher V. M. Artsikhovski; commercialized by Richard Stoner in 1983. Used in NASA's Controlled Ecological Life Support System research, in commercial seed-potato and propagation operations, and in some vertical-farm configurations (Plenty, others). Agricultural terraces

Constructed level (or near-level) planting surfaces cut into a sloping landscape, typically held in place by stone, earth, or vegetated walls. Terraces transform steep land — otherwise unsuited to agriculture — into productive farming surfaces while preventing erosion. The Andean cultures of South America, Filipino Banaue rice terraces, Chinese Loess Plateau terraces, Mediterranean olive and grape terraces, and Southeast Asian rice terraces are among the most ecologically and culturally significant terraced landscapes on Earth — many continuously cultivated for 2,000+ years.

Agroforestry

The intentional integration of trees, shrubs, and woody perennials into agricultural systems. An umbrella practice with many specific forms — alley cropping, silvopasture, riparian buffers, windbreaks, forest farming, and successional/syntropic systems. Practiced for millennia in tropical and temperate cultures (the Three Sisters polyculture, Mediterranean oak savannas, Indigenous food forests of the Pacific Northwest); reframed as a formal discipline in the 20th century. Alley Cropping

Aquaponics

A food production system that couples aquaculture (raising fish, crayfish, snails, or prawns in tanks) with hydroponics. Fish waste — primarily ammonia — is converted by nitrifying bacteria into nitrate, which the plants absorb as fertilizer; the plants in turn clean the water that returns to the fish tanks. Three living kingdoms in one symbiotic loop: animal, plant, and microbe. Ancient roots in Aztec chinampas and Southeast Asian rice-paddy fish-culture; modern aquaponics emerged from the New Alchemy Institute (1969) and North Carolina State University in the 1980s. Ash Cooking

Assisted Migration

Proposed and increasingly practiced as a response to climate-change-driven habitat shifts that exceed species' natural dispersal capacity. Atmospheric Water Generation

A class of technologies for extracting drinking water from atmospheric humidity — either through cooling air below its dew point and condensing the moisture (refrigeration-based AWG, the principal modern technology), through hygroscopic materials that adsorb atmospheric water and release it on heating (sorbent-based systems), or through passive collection of fog and dew using mesh structures (fog harvesting, the most ancient and lowest-tech approach). Beaver dam analog

Centering Prayer

A modern Christian contemplative practice developed in the 1970s by three Trappist monks at St. Joseph's Abbey, Spencer, Massachusetts — Thomas Keating, M. Check dam

A small dam or barrier built across a drainage channel to slow water flow, reduce erosion, and capture sediment. Chinampa

Chop and Drop

A permaculture and forest-garden practice of cutting back specific plants — comfrey, nettles, sorrel, daikon, sunflower, fava bean — and leaving the cut foliage on the ground as mulch around the plants you're trying to feed. Skips the compost pile entirely; the cut material decomposes in place, feeding soil biology and returning nutrients directly to the root zone of the surrounding crop. Clay Plaster

A wall-finish material made from clay, sand, and natural fibers (often chopped straw or paper pulp), sometimes with pigment additives. The most ancient wall-finish material in human history; preserved continuously across vernacular building traditions in nearly every climate region. Clay plaster is vapor-permeable, moisture-buffering, non-toxic, requires minimal energy to produce, and is fully reversible — at end of life, the plaster can be soaked, scraped, and either composted or remixed for reuse. Originated centuries ago in Britain (Devon, Cornwall) and across the Middle East and Africa; many British cob buildings are 300-500 years old and still inhabited. Cob (the word from Old English for *lump*) is monolithic — no forms, no bricks, no individual modular units; the whole wall is one shaped piece of earth. Cold Frame

Contour farming

Cultivating a sloping field along the topographic contour rather than up-and-down the slope. Each row, furrow, or planted strip runs at constant elevation, slowing water flow and reducing erosion. Practiced traditionally in many cultures (Andean Indigenous farming, Asian terraced rice); reformalized in 1930s U.S. Soil Conservation Service work after the Dust Bowl. Cooking

The transformation of raw ingredients into food using heat, time, fermentation, mechanical action, and skill. Among the oldest human practices — older than agriculture, older than language as we now speak it; the cooking-and-brain-evolution hypothesis (Wrangham) holds that cooking made the modern human brain possible by externalizing part of digestion. Cooking is the missing skill at the center of most modern dietary problems: when households cannot or do not cook, ultra-processed food and restaurant food fill the gap, and almost every aligned dietary pattern becomes harder. Coppicing

A traditional woodland-management practice in which broadleaf trees are cut down to a low stump (the *stool*) and allowed to regrow from the root system as multiple stems. Repeated on a rotational cycle (typically 7–25 years depending on species and use), coppicing produces a sustained yield of small-diameter timber, fuel, basket-making material, charcoal, and craft wood, without ever killing the tree. Cordwood

A natural-building technique in which short logs of seasoned wood (typically 12–24 inches long, the same length as a cord-wood firewood billet, hence the name) are laid across a wall, end-grain-out, with mortar between them and insulation in the wall core. The end-grain wood face shows on both interior and exterior. A vernacular tradition with roots in 19th-century North American (particularly Wisconsin and Quebec) and Northern European cabin construction; revived in the 20th-century natural-building movement and now built across a range of climates.

Cover Crop

A crop grown not for harvest but to cover the soil during periods when the bed would otherwise be empty — fall after harvest, spring before planting, between successions, or as a multi-year fallow rotation. Cover crops protect soil from erosion, build organic matter, fix nitrogen (legume cover crops), break up compaction (deep-rooted species), suppress weeds, host pollinators and beneficial insects, and scavenge residual nutrients. Zero Budget Natural Farming
