Home Gardening

Also known as: backyard gardening, household gardening, dooryard garden

Gardening at the scale of one household on one plot of land — the canonical form of the practice. Spans the small kitchen-garden bed near the door, the larger backyard vegetable plot, the suburban yard partially converted from lawn, the rural homestead's tended ground. Distinct from market gardening in that yield serves the household first, with surplus shared or preserved rather than sold; distinct from container or community gardening in that the gardener works their own piece of ground.

Most gardens in the world are home gardens. The forms vary enormously — a fifteen-square-meter Berlin Schrebergarten, a half-acre suburban backyard in Ohio, a quarter-hectare dooryard in Kerala — but the underlying pattern is the same: one household, one piece of ground, tended over years.
