Riparian buffer

A vegetated strip — typically trees, shrubs, and grasses — along a stream, river, lake, or wetland that filters runoff before it reaches the water, stabilizes streambanks, shades and cools the water, and provides wildlife habitat. One of the most cost-effective conservation practices documented; widely promoted by the USDA, state agencies, and watershed organizations. Done at landscape scale across an agricultural watershed, riparian buffers measurably reduce nitrogen, phosphorus, sediment, and pesticide loads in surface water; restore aquatic habitat; and reconnect fragmented terrestrial wildlife corridors.

Three-zone design
