Forest Gardening

Also known as: food forest, edible forest garden, agroforestry homestead

A perennial-polyculture food-production system designed to mimic the structure and ecological function of a natural forest, with multiple vertical layers (canopy fruit-and-nut trees, subcanopy small fruit trees, shrub layer, herbaceous-perennial layer, ground cover, vines, and root layer) producing edible, medicinal, and useful plants in integrated combination. Among the most-developed permaculture practices; rooted in indigenous tropical home-garden traditions (Kerala, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Maya, Amazonian) that have produced sustained food substrate for thousands of years. Practical

The seven-layer model (Robert Hart’s foundational frame, refined by Jacke & Toensmeier):

  • Plant in guilds — clusters of mutually-supportive species (the canonical “fruit tree guild” includes a fruit tree, nitrogen fixer, dynamic accumulator, pest-confuser, pollinator-attractor, ground cover, mulch producer).
  • Site sun exposure — position canopy trees so they don’t shade lower layers excessively; consider sun angles seasonally.
  • Site water flow — work with land contour; pair with swales and rainwater management.
  • Stack productive functions — every plant should serve multiple purposes (fruit + nitrogen + pollinator habitat + windbreak, etc.).
  • Plan for time — early years are mostly herbaceous and shrub establishment; full canopy maturity takes 7–15 years.
