Contour farming

Cultivating a sloping field along the topographic contour rather than up-and-down the slope. Each row, furrow, or planted strip runs at constant elevation, slowing water flow and reducing erosion. Practiced traditionally in many cultures (Andean Indigenous farming, Asian terraced rice); reformalized in 1930s U.S. Soil Conservation Service work after the Dust Bowl.
