Vermicomposting

Also known as: worm composting, vermiculture

The practice of using earthworms — typically *Eisenia fetida* (red wiggler) or *Lumbricus rubellus* — to digest organic waste and produce vermicast, a fine, microbially-rich soil amendment. Operates at smaller scale and lower temperatures than thermophilic composting, accepts kitchen waste continuously, fits inside a basement or under a kitchen sink, and produces an output many times richer in plant-available nutrients and microbiome than its inputs.

A working worm bin needs:
