Clay Plaster
Also known as: earthen plaster, natural clay plaster, American clay
A wall-finish material made from clay, sand, and natural fibers (often chopped straw or paper pulp), sometimes with pigment additives. The most ancient wall-finish material in human history; preserved continuously across vernacular building traditions in nearly every climate region. Clay plaster is vapor-permeable, moisture-buffering, non-toxic, requires minimal energy to produce, and is fully reversible — at end of life, the plaster can be soaked, scraped, and either composted or remixed for reuse. The interior wall finish that pairs with cob, adobe, straw-bale, and many other natural building systems; less common as exterior finish in wet climates due to weather sensitivity.

Clay-plaster mix typical components:
- Clay — the binder. Native clay subsoil works in many regions; commercial bagged clays (kaolin, bentonite, fire clay, Georgia clay) used where clean local clay isn’t available.

- Soft — clay plaster scratches more easily than lime or cement plaster; for high-traffic areas a harder finish coat or surface treatment may be appropriate.
- Reversible — water dissolves clay plaster; this is both a vulnerability (water infiltration) and an asset (full repair-and-reuse possible).
- Fire-resistant — clay walls don’t burn; may char locally under direct flame.

Application sequence:
- Wall preparation — substrate keyed (cob walls typically already textured; smooth substrates may need scratch coat or expanded-metal lath).
- Scratch coat — first coat, thicker, worked into substrate, scratched for tooth.
- Brown coat — second coat, leveled.
- Finish coat — thin (3–6 mm), worked smooth or textured per design intent.
- Optional surface treatments — beeswax-and-linseed oil, kaolin slip, alis (a slip-and-pigment finish), or tadelakt-influenced burnishing techniques.
Modern commercial products:
- American Clay — premixed clay plaster shipped nationally in the U.S. since 2003; standardized product, predictable performance.

- Owner-mixed — many practitioners mix from native or local clay; far cheaper, regional flavor.

Clay plaster is the wall-finish substrate across the broadest range of human cultures: African mud-and-dung walls (often with pigmented decoration), Ainu Japanese cob walls, Diné (Navajo) hogan interiors, Pueblo adobe walls, European medieval cottage interiors, traditional Yemeni qadad-and-clay buildings, Iranian tcheneh-style decorated walls, Korean traditional homes, Indian gobar (cow-dung) plasters across the subcontinent. The preservation of these traditions in working folk-and-vernacular practice is unbroken across thousands of years.
The 21st-century natural-building revival has reintroduced clay plaster to U.S. residential interiors.
