Earthship
An off-grid building design developed by architect Michael Reynolds in Taos, New Mexico, beginning in the 1970s. Earthships use earth-rammed tires as load-bearing walls, integrate passive solar heating and cooling, on-site water harvesting and treatment, indoor food production (greenhouse running the south face), and renewable energy. Designed to be entirely self-sufficient — no grid connection, no city water, no sewage hookup, no utility bills. Several thousand Earthships exist worldwide; the Greater World Earthship Community in Taos is the largest concentration.
Six principles
Reynolds’ Earthship design integrates six principles:

Construction
Walls are built from used automobile tires packed with earth — each tire becomes a 300-lb earth-filled brick. Tire walls run east-west on the north side (high thermal mass, no exposure). The south face is a tilted glass greenhouse, capturing winter sun and growing food. Interior walls often use earth-and-glass-bottle construction.
Roof catches rainwater into cisterns; water flows through filters to indoor uses; greywater feeds botanical-cell planters; blackwater feeds outdoor planters or [[constructed-wetlands|constructed wetlands]]. [[solar-pv|Solar PV]] panels and battery banks power lights and appliances.
