Sun-dried bricks made of clay-rich subsoil, sand, water, and often natural fiber (straw, manure), molded in wooden forms and dried in sun and air without firing. One of the oldest and most-widespread building traditions in human history; major continuous traditions across the Americas (Pueblo, Hispano New Mexico, central Mexico, the Andes), the Middle East and North Africa, the Iberian Peninsula, and elsewhere. Adobe walls are thick (typically 14–24 inches), thermally massive, vapor-permeable, fire-resistant, and made from on-site or near-site materials.
