Chinampa
Also known as: Floating gardens, Aztec floating gardens
An Aztec/Mexica agricultural system of constructing artificial islands and rectangular field beds in shallow lakes — built from layers of mud, vegetation, and lake-bottom sediment, anchored by trees (typically *ahuejote*, the Mexican willow). Practiced extensively in the Valley of Mexico, particularly Lake Xochimilco and Lake Texcoco, for centuries before Spanish contact. Produced extraordinarily high yields — among the most productive agricultural systems documented historically. Continuous fertilization from the surrounding water and lake-mud applications maintained fertility indefinitely.
