Integrated pest management

An ecological approach to agricultural pest management that uses pest population monitoring, threshold-based decision making, and a hierarchy of intervention methods (biological, cultural, mechanical, then chemical only as last resort) to manage pest populations below economic injury levels with minimum disruption of beneficial organisms and ecosystem function. Developed in the 1950s and 1960s in response to the documented failures of calendar-spray pesticide regimes (resistance development, secondary pest outbreaks, beneficial-organism kills, environmental contamination — the issues Rachel Carson named in *Silent Spring*). The five steps of IPM:

  1. Identify the pest accurately. Many “pest” sightings turn out to be beneficial insects, look-alikes, or pests at population levels that don’t justify intervention. Misidentification drives a substantial fraction of unnecessary pesticide application.
  2. Monitor pest population and damage. Use scouting protocols, sticky traps, pheromone traps, or visual inspection on a regular schedule. Establish baseline pest pressure for the cropping system.
  3. Establish economic injury levels and thresholds. The economic injury level is the pest density at which control cost equals control benefit. The threshold is the pest density at which intervention is triggered (usually slightly below the injury level, allowing time for action).   4. Apply controls in hierarchy. Cultural controls first (sanitation, [[crop-rotation|crop rotation]], resistant varieties, planting timing). Biological controls next (release or conservation of natural enemies, beneficial-insect habitat). Mechanical controls (row covers, hand-removal, traps). Chemical controls only when the threshold is exceeded and the prior methods have not been adequate; preferring the least-broadly-toxic, most-target-specific available product.
  5. Evaluate and adjust. After each intervention, assess effectiveness, ecological side effects, and long-term population trends. Adjust the management approach for next season.
