Living roof

Also known as: Green roof, Sod roof, Vegetated roof

A roof partially or fully covered with growing plants — over a waterproof membrane, drainage layer, growing medium, and vegetation. Traditional Scandinavian sod roofs are centuries-old; modern green-roof technology emerged in 1970s Germany and spread internationally. Living roofs reduce stormwater runoff, insulate the building, support pollinators and biodiversity, sequester carbon, extend roof membrane life, and produce beauty in urban environments. Range from extensive (3-6 inches of growing medium, sedums and herbs) to intensive (12+ inches, full gardens or even small trees).

Two types

Layers (typical extensive green roof)

From the roof deck up:

  3. Drainage layer — drainage mat or aggregate; routes excess water to drains
  4. Filter fabric — keeps growing medium out of drainage
  5. Growing medium — engineered lightweight mix; not soil (too heavy and saturating)
  6. Plants — sedum mats (for fast establishment) or plug planting
