Check dam

A small dam or barrier built across a drainage channel to slow water flow, reduce erosion, and capture sediment. Smaller and more numerous than conventional dams; built from rock, woody debris, gabion baskets, or concrete depending on context. Check dams have been used for millennia in arid-land restoration; modern adoption ranges from grass-roots watershed restoration to USDA-NRCS standard practice. The cumulative effect of many small check dams along a drainage network can dramatically improve water retention, reduce flooding, and restart riparian vegetation.

Forms

  • Loose-rock check dam — stones piled in a drainage; permeable; slows water without stopping it
  • Gabion check dam — wire-mesh baskets filled with rock; more durable than loose stone

Why they work

In a degraded drainage:

  • Sediment drops out of the slowed water, accumulating behind the dam
  • Over time, the channel aggrades (fills with sediment) rather than incising
  • Wet patches form behind each dam; vegetation establishes
  • Over many dams, the entire drainage network rehabilitates

Famous example

Bill Zeedyk’s drainage restoration in the U.S. Southwest — particularly New Mexico and [[sedona|Arizona]] — used “induced meandering” with one-rock dams, baffles, and other small structures to restore badly-eroded grasslands and small streams.
