Mulching
Also known as: sheet mulching, deep mulch
The practice of covering soil surface with organic or inorganic material to suppress weeds, conserve moisture, moderate temperature, build soil organic matter, and protect against erosion. One of the simplest and oldest cultivation practices — a forest floor is, structurally, a self-mulching system. Modern garden, orchard, and farm mulching ranges from straw and woodchip on backyard beds to broadacre cover-crop residue under no-till field systems.
