U-pick

Also known as: Pick-your-own, PYO, U-pick farm, Pick-your-own farm

A direct-market model in which the eater harvests their own produce in the field and pays by weight or container. It collapses the supply chain to zero links — farm to hand, no broker, no cold chain, no waste in transit — and turns a transaction into a half-day on the land. Common for tree fruit, berries, pumpkins, and flowers; structurally it is the shortest possible food chain and a working piece of agritourism.

What it is

The farm opens its rows; the visitor picks, weighs, and pays. There is no middleman, no packing line, no transport loss, and often no refrigeration between plant and kitchen. For the farm it converts standing crop into revenue with minimal labor and harvest cost; for the eater it is the shortest food chain that exists and, increasingly, the reason for the trip.

Why it belongs here

U-pick does three mission-aligned things at once:

Zero-link supply chain — nothing is shorter than picking it yourself. No spoilage in transit, no broker margin, no provenance ambiguity.
Reconnection — most people have never stood in the system that feeds them. A morning in an orchard is direct, embodied knowledge, not a label.
Farm resilience — on-farm direct sales keep margin with the grower instead of the distributor, which is what lets small and multi-generational orchards survive.

Where it fits

It pairs naturally with multi-generational orchards and berry farms (the crop is sturdy enough to be handled by amateurs and the season is concentrated). It complements rather than replaces wholesale: a farm often runs u-pick on its premium varieties and ships or wholesales the rest. It is a sibling of [[community-supported-agriculture|CSA]] — both remove every intermediary between the field and the eater; they differ only in whether the commitment is a season (CSA) or a morning (u-pick).

U-pick is a genuine zero-intermediary channel and a real piece of [[directory|directory]]-relevant agritourism — but it is seasonal and crop-limited, a complement to a farm’s livelihood, not usually its whole basis.
