Straw bale building
Also known as: Straw-bale construction
A natural-building method using bales of agricultural straw (typically wheat, rice, or rye) as wall infill, plastered inside and out with earth, lime, or cement. Originated on the Nebraska Sandhills in the late 1800s when settlers used the only available material; revived in the 1980s-90s as part of the natural-building movement. Excellent insulation values (R-30 to R-50+ for thick walls), uses an agricultural waste stream, sequesters carbon in the bales, and produces breathable buildings with thick deep windowsills. Widely permitted today; thousands of straw-bale homes exist in the U.S. Southwest, Pacific Northwest, and elsewhere.
Method
Walls are built from rectangular straw bales — typically 18”x14”x36” “two-string” or 23”x16”x46” “three-string” bales weighing 50-90 lbs. Bales are stacked like masonry, pinned with rebar or bamboo, and plastered with multiple coats of earth, lime, or cement plaster.
Two main approaches:
- Load-bearing (Nebraska-style) — bales themselves carry roof load; structural posts not required
