Agricultural terraces
Also known as: Terracing, Stepped fields
Constructed level (or near-level) planting surfaces cut into a sloping landscape, typically held in place by stone, earth, or vegetated walls. Terraces transform steep land — otherwise unsuited to agriculture — into productive farming surfaces while preventing erosion. The Andean cultures of South America, Filipino Banaue rice terraces, Chinese Loess Plateau terraces, Mediterranean olive and grape terraces, and Southeast Asian rice terraces are among the most ecologically and culturally significant terraced landscapes on Earth — many continuously cultivated for 2,000+ years.

Loss and restoration
Agricultural terraces are vulnerable to abandonment when economics shift away from manual hill agriculture. Mediterranean and Asian terraces have been lost in significant amounts through the 20th century. Restoration projects in Italy, Portugal, Spain, and elsewhere are working to recover terraced landscapes for food production and cultural preservation.
