Superadobe

Also known as: SuperAdobe, Earthbag building

A natural-building method using long polypropylene tubes (or sandbags) filled with moistened subsoil, laid in horizontal courses with barbed wire between courses, and plastered inside and out. Developed by Iranian-American architect Nader Khalili (1936-2008) and the California Institute of Earth Art and Architecture (Cal-Earth). Designed for rapid emergency construction (refugee shelters, disaster housing) but also used for permanent homes. The technique is exceptionally fast, requires minimal skilled labor, and produces structurally-strong domes and vaults from local subsoil.

Method

  1. Lay long polypropylene tube (or individual sandbags) on the wall line
  2. Fill with moistened subsoil (slightly damp; not wet)
  3. Tamp the bag/tube to compress
  4. Lay barbed wire on top of the course (mechanical key for the next course)
  5. Lay the next course; continue
  6. Build vertical walls or progressively-stepped domes/vaults
  7. Plaster inside and out with earth, lime, or cement plaster

Khalili and Cal-Earth

Nader Khalili (1936-2008), an Iranian-American architect, developed superadobe at Cal-Earth in Hesperia, [[berkeley|California]], beginning in the 1980s. His vision was emergency shelter for displaced peoples and the global poor — buildings that could be made from “what’s underfoot, what we put on top, and what we can do with our hands.”

Cal-Earth has trained thousands of practitioners through workshops. The technique has been used for:
