Vavilov Centers

The eight to twelve geographic regions, identified by Soviet botanist Nikolai Vavilov in his 1926 work *Centers of Origin of Cultivated Plants*, where humanity's staple crops were first domesticated and where their genetic diversity still principally lives. Most are concentrated in tropical and subtropical mountain belts — places of strong topographic variation, microclimate diversity, and continuous human selection across ten millennia. Vavilov's mapping was empirical: he led 180 plant-collecting expeditions to 64 countries between 1916 and 1940, and the centers are the regions where he found the greatest concentration of varietal diversity for each crop he tracked.
