Nikolai Vavilov

Russian botanist (1887–1943) who founded the world's first systematic seed bank, mapped the geographic centers of origin for the planet's major crops, and assembled the largest plant genetic collection of his era — over 250,000 specimens by 1940. Life

His core insight was that the genetic diversity of a crop is highest near its center of origin, where it has been continuously refined by indigenous farmers for millennia. The wild relatives growing on a hillside in Ethiopia or the Pamirs are the genetic library the entire world depends on. Lose that library and you lose the raw material for adapting crops to future climates, pests, and diseases.

VIR — the seed bank

In 1921, at age 34, Vavilov was appointed director of the Bureau of Applied Botany in Petrograd (later Leningrad, now St. [[petersburg-ny|Petersburg]]), which under his leadership became the [[vir-seed-bank|All-Union Institute of Plant Industry]] — VIR. By the late 1930s, VIR held over 250,000 seed accessions, the largest collection in the world. It was not just a vault but a working research institute, with field stations across the Soviet Union testing the collected diversity for cold tolerance, drought tolerance, disease resistance.

The fall — Lysenko and Stalin

Trofim Lysenko was an ambitious agronomist with no genuine scientific training who claimed (against all evidence) that wheat could be “vernalized” into hardier strains by chilling its seeds, and that acquired traits could be heritably passed on. His pseudoscience aligned with Stalinist ideology — the idea that nature, like men, could be remade by political will. Mendelian genetics was denounced as bourgeois Western science. Vavilov, the most prominent geneticist in the USSR, was the obstacle.

Vavilov refused to recant. Through the late 1930s he continued to defend genetics publicly, even as his colleagues were arrested. In August 1940, while on a botanical expedition in western Ukraine, he was arrested by NKVD agents. He spent the next two and a half years in prison interrogation — over 400 sessions — and was sentenced to death (later commuted to twenty years) on charges of “sabotage” and being a “British spy.” He was transferred to Saratov prison, where conditions were severe and food was scarce.

Vavilov died of starvation in his Saratov cell on January 26, 1943.

Lysenko remained scientifically dominant in the Soviet Union until 1965. The damage to Soviet biology and agriculture took decades to repair.

The siege

While Vavilov was imprisoned, the Nazi Siege of Leningrad (1941–1944) closed in around VIR. [[san-francisco|The city]] was cut off; over a million civilians died of starvation. The seed collection contained tons of edible grain, beans, rice, peanuts, potatoes — enough to feed thousands.
