Svalbard Global Seed Vault

Also known as: Svalbard Seed Vault, Doomsday Vault

A long-term seed storage facility built into the side of a sandstone mountain on the Svalbard archipelago, ~1,300 km from the North Pole. Opened February 2008. Built and operated jointly by the Norwegian government, the Crop Trust (Global Crop Diversity Trust), and the Nordic Genetic Resource Center. Designed as the world's backup seed bank: holds duplicate samples of seed accessions deposited by national and international gene banks worldwide. As of 2024, holds over 1.2 million accessions from gene banks in 80+ countries — the largest seed-conservation collection in the world. Permafrost-cooled, redundantly-engineered, intended to survive nuclear, pandemic, and climate disasters.

  • Distant — far from population centers, supply-chain disruption, or military targets

How it operates

The vault holds duplicate samples of seed accessions sent by the depositing institutions. The depositing institutions retain ownership; Svalbard holds the samples in trust as backup storage. If a depositor’s home [[seed-bank|gene bank]] is destroyed (by war, disaster, neglect, climate event), the depositor can request return of its Svalbard duplicates.

The vault is normally sealed; staff visit only a few times per year for new deposits and maintenance. Three storage rooms hold the seeds; only one is currently in use (the others are reserves). Inside, seeds are stored at -18°C in vacuum-sealed packets within sealed boxes.

Notable history

  • 2015 — first withdrawal: ICARDA, the Aleppo-based International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas, requested return of accessions after the Syrian civil war made the Aleppo [[seed-bank|seed bank]] inaccessible. Seeds were used to restart ICARDA’s collection in Lebanon and Morocco.
  • 2017 — water leak: rising temperatures and unusually heavy rain caused water to enter the entrance tunnel. Seeds were unaffected (the actual storage is far inside the mountain), but the incident prompted infrastructure upgrades and was widely reported as a “Doomsday Vault” close call.
  • Continuing deposits — twice-yearly seed deposit ceremonies receive new accessions from depositing institutions

Limits and significance

Svalbard is a backup, not a primary collection. Active seed work happens at the depositing institutions worldwide. Svalbard’s role is to ensure that no single regional disaster — war, climate event, institutional failure — can permanently lose the diversity in any single collection.

The vault has limits: only orthodox (freezable) seeds can be stored; recalcitrant tropical crops require alternative conservation; living-tradition aspects of landrace agriculture (the active selection on working farms) are not captured by frozen storage. Svalbard is one piece of a broader conservation system, not a complete solution.

But within its function, the vault is remarkable: a planetary-scale agreement that the genetic substrate of food matters enough to preserve in shared infrastructure, against shared risks, for shared futures.
