Permaculture

A design framework synthesized by Bill Mollison and David Holmgren in Tasmania in the late 1970s — observing how mature ecosystems work and applying those patterns to human systems (farms, gardens, settlements, eventually economies). Practical concepts
Zones (frequency-of-use design)
Permaculture organizes design space by how often you visit each area [1]:
- Zone 0 — the house itself
- Zone 1 — daily-visit area: kitchen herbs, salad greens, doorstep harvests
- Zone 2 — several-times-a-week: chickens, soft fruits, regularly-tended vegetables
- Zone 3 — weekly to monthly: orchard, main crops, larger livestock

The point: arrange high-attention elements close to where you spend time. Don’t force yourself to walk to Zone 4 every day to harvest salad. Design for the actual energy you have to spend.
Sectors (energy-flow design)
Where does sun come from? Where do storms come from? Where does fire risk approach from? Where does the wildlife corridor run? Sector analysis maps the energy and information flows through a site so design can interact with them deliberately.
Guilds (mutually beneficial groupings)

Perennial preference
Annual cropping requires annual tilling; tilling destroys soil community and structure. Permaculture favors perennial polycultures that remain in place for many years and build soil progressively [1].
