The Latin species name *armeniaca* reflects the historical (incorrect) assumption that Armenia was its origin; the species traveled west via the Silk Road through Armenia, Persia, and the Levant before reaching the Mediterranean. The fruit is central to Central Asian, Iranian, Turkish, and Levantine cuisines — fresh, dried, and made into the lavash-like *t'tu lavash* / *bastegh* / *amardine* fruit-leather of the region.

Scientific

Prunus armeniaca is in Rosaceae, same genus as peach, plum, cherry, and almond. The fruit is a drupe with velvety orange-yellow skin and a single hard pit. The kernel inside the pit is bitter-almond-like and contains amygdalin (a cyanogenic glycoside); a few apricot kernels are sometimes used as bitter-almond substitutes in baking, but eating large quantities raw is dangerous.

Cultural and historical

Northwestern Chinese / Central Asian origin. Carried west via the Silk Road through the Hunza Valley (Pakistan/Kashmir), where apricot cultivation has been continuous for centuries and where some of the oldest apricot landraces still grow. From there to Persia, Armenia, Anatolia, the Levant, and finally the Mediterranean.

In Hunza, Kashmir, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, the apricot is a foundational fruit — fresh in summer, dried for winter, the kernel oil pressed for cooking. The Turkish city of Malatya is the largest single producer of dried apricots in the world.
