Plant
Peach
Prunus persica
Also known as: Prunus persica
A deciduous fruit tree in the rose family (Rosaceae), domesticated in northwestern China at least 4,000 years ago. The scientific name *persica* reflects the species' later spread through Persia — Europe encountered the peach through Persian intermediaries and assumed (incorrectly) that Persia was its origin. Foundational to East Asian and Mediterranean stone-fruit traditions; the most-grown stone fruit in the world.
Scientific
Prunus persica is in Rosaceae, same genus as plum, cherry, almond, and [[apricot|apricot]]. Two principal cultivar groups: freestone (flesh separates cleanly from the pit; eaten fresh) and clingstone (flesh adheres to the pit; canning and processing).
The nectarine is the same species — Prunus persica var. nucipersica — distinguished only by a smooth-skinned recessive trait.
Cultural
Northwest Chinese origin ~4,000 years ago. The peach carries profound symbolic weight in Chinese culture — the Queen Mother of the West’s mythical peach orchard granted immortality; peach blossoms signify spring and renewal; peach wood was thought to ward off evil. The species moved west via the Silk Road into Persia and the Mediterranean, then into Europe; later spread to the Americas through Spanish missions in the 16th–17th centuries.
Global production
Top producers: China, Spain, Italy, Greece, Iran. Chinese production accounts for ~60% of the global crop.
