Tallgrass prairie

The eastern grassland ecosystem of central North America — a continuous mosaic of perennial grasses (big bluestem, Indian grass, switchgrass, little bluestem) and forbs (compass plant, prairie dock, blazing star, dozens of asters and sunflowers) that once stretched from southern Manitoba through Texas and from eastern Ohio through Kansas and Nebraska. Maintained by fire, by bison and elk grazing, by Indigenous land management, for at least the post-glacial 10,000 years. Roughly 170 million acres at the time of European contact. Less than 4% remains today; the rest was plowed for corn and wheat between roughly 1830 and 1890. The tallgrass prairie is the largest ecosystem-scale loss in North American history. The conversion was nearly total within a single human lifetime.

What was

The tallgrass prairie was the eastern third of the great central North American grassland — the most-mesic, most-productive grassland on the continent. Annual precipitation across its range averaged 25 to 40 inches, enough that the grasses grew 6 to 8 feet tall in good years, with root systems descending 10 to 15 feet into the ground. The biomass underground exceeded the biomass above.

Hundreds of plant species composed the community: dominant warm-season grasses (big bluestem, Indian grass, [[switchgrass|switchgrass]], little bluestem) interspersed with deep-rooted forbs (compass plant, prairie dock, leadplant, blazing stars, dozens of asters and sunflowers and milkweeds). Soil-building was rapid; the deep dark prairie soils were the richest agricultural soils on the continent.

The ecosystem was maintained by three forces — fire, large herbivore grazing (bison primarily, also elk and pronghorn), and Indigenous land management — operating continuously for the 10,000 years since the last glaciation. The prairie was not wilderness in the European sense; it was a managed landscape on continental scale.

How it ended

Within roughly 60 years, the tallgrass prairie was almost entirely plowed.

Today, less than 4% of the original tallgrass prairie remains — most of it as small remnants on rocky outcrops, in old cemeteries, along railroad rights-of-way that escaped the plow. The largest remaining tract is the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve in the Flint Hills of Oklahoma and Kansas — and even there, the prairie persists primarily because the limestone bedrock made it too rocky to plow.

The displacement of the prairie nations — the Pawnee, Otoe-Missouria, Osage, Kaw, Omaha, Ponca, and many others — happened in the same decades, by the same forces. The ecosystem and the cultures that had co-evolved for thousands of years were removed together.

These remnants and reconstructions are the basis for any continuing knowledge of the ecosystem. They are not enough to support continental populations of grassland birds (most of which have declined 50–90% since 1970), bison at ecological scale, or the deep ecological processes that 170 million acres supported.

What the loss means

The tallgrass prairie is the largest ecosystem-scale loss in North American history. The conversion to corn-belt agriculture was nearly total within 60 years. The grassland-bird population collapses currently underway — bobolinks, eastern meadowlarks, dickcissels, grasshopper sparrows, Henslow’s sparrows — are downstream of this loss, three or four generations later. The world’s largest ecosystem-scale carbon-storage system in temperate latitudes was plowed to grow annual crops; the carbon released over that century is still in [[air|the atmosphere]].

The remaining 4% is not enough to restore the ecosystem; it is enough to remember it. The tallgrass prairie is the case where North American conservation learned what it means to lose an entire biome in a single human lifetime.
