What survives, anyway

The black-footed ferret, the [[berkeley|California]] condor, the Arabian oryx, the Mauritius kestrel were all reduced to fewer than 30 individuals and have been recovered to small but stable populations. The work is intensive, multi-generational, and not always successful — but it sometimes succeeds.
Restoration projects continue: the [[chestnut|American chestnut]] breeding programs, the tallgrass-prairie reconstructions, the eastern-elk reintroductions (with western stock), the Buffalo Commons proposal. These efforts will not bring back what was lost. They sometimes preserve enough of the ecological structure that something related can continue.
