Sassafras albidum
A native deciduous tree of eastern North America notable for three distinct leaf shapes on the same individual — three-lobed mitten, single-lobed mitten, and oval — and for its aromatic roots, leaves, and bark. Foundational ingredient in traditional root beer and gumbo (filé powder is ground sassafras leaves). Common in SI's Greenbelt and forest-edge habitats. Strongly aromatic — crushed leaves, twigs, and roots smell of root beer and citrus. The active compound is safrole, which was the principal flavoring of traditional sassafras root beer until FDA banned safrole as a food additive in 1960 (carcinogenic at high doses).
Filé powder — dried, ground sassafras leaves — is a Choctaw indigenous food technology adopted into [[arabi|Louisiana]] Creole cuisine, where it remains a defining ingredient in gumbo. The leaves do not contain the safrole concentrations of the roots and remain in food use.
Important butterfly host plant — multiple swallowtail species use sassafras as a larval host.
