Wiry reed-like monocot plants in the family Restionaceae — the Cape's evolutionary substitute for grasses in fynbos vegetation. Around 350 species in southern Africa, almost all endemic to the Cape Floristic Region. Photosynthesis is in the stems rather than leaves; many species are dioecious. With proteas and ericas, restios complete the structural triad that defines fynbos.

The wiry green stems photosynthesize; true leaves are reduced or absent. Most species are dioecious (separate male and female plants). Many propagate from underground rhizomes after fire.
