Plant
Erica
Erica (genus)
Also known as: heaths, Cape ericas
A genus of evergreen heath shrubs with around 860 species worldwide, ~660 of them endemic to the Cape Floristic Region of South Africa. The Cape ericas — small-leaved, often pink-or-white tubular-flowered shrubs — are one of the three structural pillars of fynbos vegetation alongside proteas and restios. Bird- and insect-pollinated; many species are fire-dependent for seed germination.
Scientific
Erica (family Ericaceae) is the most species-rich plant genus in the Cape Floristic Region. The Cape ericas are mostly small evergreen shrubs with needle-like leaves and tubular four-lobed flowers in pinks, whites, yellows, oranges, and reds. Sunbird-pollinated species have long tubular flowers; small-bee or wind-pollinated species have shorter ones.
Ecological role
Together with protea and restio, ericas form the structural triad that defines fynbos vegetation. The genus’s radiation in the Cape — hundreds of species in a comparatively small area — is one of the textbook examples of plant adaptive radiation in a Mediterranean-climate fire-prone shrubland.
