A genus of around 500 species of evergreen flowering plants in the arum family (Araceae) — native to tropical rainforests of the Americas, especially Central America, the Amazon, and parts of the Caribbean. The genus name (Greek *phileo* = love + *dendron* = tree) reflects the plant's habit of climbing trees in the wild.
