Kittatinny Ridge
Also known as: Blue Mountain, Kittatinny Mountain, Shawangunk Ridge
A 185-mile-long Appalachian ridge of erosion-resistant Silurian quartzite (the Shawangunk Formation), running diagonally from the Shawangunks of New York southwest through New Jersey and Pennsylvania to the Susquehanna River. Forms the eastern boundary of the Pocono bioregion and the western wall of the Great Valley. The Delaware River cuts through the ridge at the Delaware Water Gap; the Susquehanna and Schuylkill cut through at other points. The Appalachian Trail follows the ridgecrest for over 70 miles. One of the most consequential migratory raptor flyways in the eastern United States — Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, on the ridge's PA section, sees 15,000+ raptors per fall.
Geology
Kittatinny Ridge is a single continuous erosion-resistant outcrop of the Shawangunk Formation — a Silurian-age quartz conglomerate and quartzite, deposited as coarse fluvial sediments roughly 425 million years ago and later metamorphosed and folded by Appalachian mountain-building events. The formation’s hardness and chemical resistance have left it standing as the surrounding sedimentary rocks (limestone, shale) eroded into the valleys on either side.
The ridge is generally 1,300 to 1,900 feet above the Great Valley floor and runs as a remarkably straight, narrow crest — typical width 0.5 to 1 mile, length 185 miles unbroken except where rivers cut through.
Water gaps
The ridge is famous for its water gaps — places where rivers crossed the line of the ridge before the ridge rose, and continued cutting downward as the ridge lifted. Major gaps:
- Delaware Water Gap (PA/NJ) — the Delaware River, ~1,300 ft deep
- Susquehanna Gap (Carlisle, PA) — the Susquehanna River
- Schuylkill Gap (Hamburg, PA) — the Schuylkill River
- Lehigh Gap (PA) — the Lehigh River
Each is a textbook example of “antecedent drainage” in geology textbooks.
Ecological significance
Kittatinny Ridge is the eastern United States’ single most consequential migratory raptor flyway. The ridge produces strong updrafts when northwest winds hit its windward face; raptors riding those updrafts can cover huge distances without flapping. Hundreds of thousands of raptors use the ridge annually, concentrated heavily in mid-September (broad-winged hawks) and mid-October to mid-November (red-tailed hawks, golden eagles, sharp-shinned hawks, peregrine falcons).
The ridge’s 70+ miles of Appalachian Trail through PA-NJ is one of the most-walked sections in the AT system — partly because it’s accessible from major eastern population centers, partly because the ridgetop provides continuous views and dry walking even in wet weather.
Why it matters for the Poconos
Kittatinny Ridge is the bioregion’s eastern wall. The ridgeline marks where the Pocono Plateau drops off into the Great Valley; everything west and north of it (within the relevant counties) is the Pocono bioregion in its wider sense, and everything east and south is the Great Valley / Lehigh Valley.
The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area protects the ridge for ~25 miles on either side of the Delaware. South of the NRA, ridge protection becomes patchier — a mix of state game lands, private holdings, and increasingly fragmented pieces.
