A medium-sized native rodent endemic to the rocky outcrops, talus slopes, cliffs, and cave systems of the central and northern Appalachian region. Distinguished from the introduced Norway and black rats by larger eyes, white belly, fully furred tail, and complete dependence on undisturbed rocky habitat. Once common across most of Appalachia, the species has declined catastrophically in the northeastern part of its range — including all of Pennsylvania — through a combination of raccoon-roundworm parasitism, oak-mast collapse, and habitat fragmentation. Pocono Plateau outcrops and the Kittatinny Ridge talus historically held substantial populations; current status across most of PA is functionally extirpated. The Allegheny woodrat is a true New World native rodent in the family Cricetidae — not related to the introduced Rattus species despite a superficial resemblance. The genus Neotoma (woodrats / pack rats) contains 22 species across North America; N. magister is the easternmost.
Anatomy. Body 8–10 inches; tail 7–9 inches, thick and fully furred (very different from the scaly, bare-looking tail of Rattus). Weight 8–14 oz. Pelage gray-brown above, clean white below. Large eyes and ears (a nocturnal-rocky-habitat specialist).
Behavior. Solitary except briefly in mating season. Nocturnal. Builds large stick-and-debris middens in rock crevices, caves, and overhangs. The middens accumulate over generations and contain a record of the regional flora and substrate (woodrat middens have provided some of the best long-term paleoecological data for the Appalachians).
Diet. Generalist omnivore with strong dependence on hard mast (acorns, beech nuts, [[hickory|hickory]] nuts) for winter food. Also fungi, fruits, leaves, and rare invertebrates.
Reproduction. 1–3 litters per year of 2–4 young. Lifespan 3 years typical, 5+ in undisturbed habitat.
