Blueberry

Vaccinium (genus)

Also known as: Vaccinium, highbush blueberry, lowbush blueberry

A genus of shrubs in the heath family (Ericaceae), native to North America and (to a lesser extent) East Asia. Unlike most commercial fruits, the blueberry was domesticated extraordinarily recently — Elizabeth White and Frederick Coville began breeding the modern cultivated highbush blueberry in New Jersey in 1908. The species (*Vaccinium corymbosum*) had been a wild-foraged fruit for Indigenous Americans for millennia before; the cultivated form is a 20th-century achievement.

Scientific

The cultivated blueberry is primarily Vaccinium corymbosum (northern highbush) in temperate commercial production, with V. angustifolium (lowbush) dominant in Maine, the Maritimes, and Quebec. Other related species: V. ashei (rabbiteye, southeastern US), V. virgatum, and the European [[bilberry|bilberry]] V. myrtillus.

The genus prefers acidic soils — a horticultural quirk that often surprises gardeners trying to grow them in neutral soil. The anthocyanin pigments responsible for the deep blue color are the basis of the antioxidant claims that have made the fruit a modern health-food fixture.

Cultural

Wild blueberries were foundational to many Indigenous American foodways — the Algonquian, Haudenosaunee, Wabanaki, and Anishinaabe nations all had blueberry-gathering and drying traditions. The fruit was an important winter calorie source, dried into [[pemmican|pemmican]] mixes or eaten fresh in late summer.

Modern cultivation

Frederick Coville (USDA scientist) and Elizabeth White (New Jersey farmer) began controlled blueberry breeding around 1908. By the 1920s commercial cultivation was producing the first true horticultural cultivars. The crop’s economic significance accelerated dramatically in the 1990s–2010s as health-food marketing made blueberries a fixture of mainstream American diets.

Global production

Top producers: USA, Canada, Peru, Spain, Mexico.
