Banana

Musa (genus)

Also known as: Musa, plantain

A giant herbaceous monocot — botanically not a tree, despite the form — domesticated in island Southeast Asia / New Guinea around 7,000 years ago from wild *Musa acuminata* and *Musa balbisiana*. The world's most-produced fruit, and the dietary staple of much of the wet tropics — across central Africa, the Andes, parts of India, and Southeast Asia. The global commercial Cavendish trade is a single-clone monoculture currently under existential threat from a *Fusarium* wilt strain (TR4).

Scientific

The banana is a giant herbaceous monocot in the family Musaceae — the “trunk” is a pseudostem of tightly-furled leaf sheaths, not woody tissue. The plant reproduces vegetatively by suckers from the underground corm; commercial banana fruit are triploid and seedless, which is why a Cavendish banana has no real seeds.

Two principal categories:

  • Dessert bananas — sweet, eaten raw; Cavendish is the dominant commercial cultivar
  • Plantains — starchier, eaten cooked; the staple-food banana across much of the tropics

Cultural and dietary

Across central Africa (Uganda, the DRC, Rwanda), bananas and plantains are the primary dietary staple — daily per-capita banana consumption in Uganda exceeds 250 kg per year. The same is true in parts of South India, the Philippines, and the Andean lowlands. Where the banana is a staple, it is the staple.

Monoculture vulnerability

The 20th-century commercial banana trade ran on the Gros Michel cultivar until Fusarium wilt Race 1 wiped it out commercially in the 1950s. The replacement — Cavendish — is now threatened by Tropical Race 4 of the same fungus, which spread from Asia to Latin America in the 2010s–2020s. There is no chemical control and no resistant Cavendish replacement; the long-term solution is genetic diversification away from the single-clone model that built the trade.

Global production

Top producers: India, China, Indonesia, Brazil, Ecuador.
