Swami Sivananda Saraswati

Indian renunciant (1887–1963) — physician-turned-monk who founded the Divine Life Society at Rishikesh on the Ganga in 1936 and the Yoga-Vedanta Forest Academy in 1948. One of the principal 20th-century Indian teachers transmitting yoga, Vedanta, and karma-yoga ethics to a global student body. His direct disciples — Vishnudevananda, Satchidananda, Chinmayananda, Satyananda, and others — founded the principal modern American yoga lineages tracing back through Sivananda.

Swami Sivananda Saraswati (1887–1963) was a South Indian physician who renounced his medical practice in his thirties to become a Himalayan monk, founding the Divine Life Society at Rishikesh on the Ganges in 1936 and the Yoga-Vedanta Forest Academy in 1948. From these institutions he transmitted yoga, Vedanta, [[karma-yoga|karma-yoga]] ethics, and a programmatic five-points-of-yoga synthesis (asana, pranayama, relaxation, vegetarian diet, positive thinking and meditation) to several generations of disciples — many of whom became the founders of the principal Western yoga institutions of the late 20th century.

The lineage chain runs through several major branches: Vishnudevananda founded the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centers (the international ashram network); Satchidananda founded the [[integral-yoga-institute-nyc]] (1966) and gave the opening invocation at Woodstock in 1969; Chinmayananda founded the Chinmaya [[mission-district-sf|Mission]]; Satyananda founded the Bihar School of Yoga (the lineage’s most rigorous classical-yoga institutional expression); Vishnudevananda also produced The Complete Illustrated Book of Yoga (1960), one of the first widely-circulated English-language yoga reference texts. Sivananda himself authored over 200 books — the Bliss Divine and Spiritual Lessons volumes among the most widely-read.
