Salmon Runs

The annual return of anadromous Pacific salmon — chinook (king), chum (dog), coho (silver), pink (humpy), sockeye (red), and steelhead — from open ocean to their natal freshwater streams to spawn and die. Salmon runs are the most ecologically and culturally consequential animal migrations in the temperate Pacific Rim. Each run delivers oceanic nutrients to inland forests via spawned-and-died salmon bodies; supports orca, brown bear, eagle, and dozens of other species; and has structured the food, cosmology, and political life of Pacific Rim Indigenous peoples — Yurok, Karuk, Tlingit, Haida, Tsimshian, Coast Salish, Ainu, and many others — for millennia.

The 19th–20th-century collapse of Pacific salmon runs — dam construction (Grand Coulee, Bonneville, Klamath, Iron Gate), industrial commercial fishing, hatchery-driven genetic dilution, water-temperature rise, agricultural runoff, urban development on spawning streams — is one of the largest unmaking-of-an-ecosystem-and-a-people stories in U.S. and Canadian history.
