Puget Sound

Also known as: Salish Sea (US side), Greater Seattle, Cascadia coastal lowland

The protected saltwater basin of Puget Sound — a sheltered glacial-fjord system flanked by the Olympic Mountains to the west and the Cascades to the east. Seattle, Tacoma, Olympia, and Bellingham anchor the population corridor; coastal temperate rainforest is the original land cover. Coast Salish peoples have inhabited the basin for millennia. One of the most-developed plant-based food regions of the US.

Why this entry

Puget Sound enters [[directory|the directory]] as the bioregion anchor for the 7+ Seattle vegan operations from the 2026-05-11 Overpass bulk ingest. Stub.

What’s distinctive

  • A glacial saltwater fjord system. Puget Sound is one of the largest estuarine fjord complexes in the continental US — its complex shoreline is the result of the last continental glacier.
  • Salish Sea ecology. Salmon-bearing rivers, orca pods, geoduck beds, eelgrass meadows — a coastal-marine ecosystem under acute stress and the focus of extensive recovery work.
  • Coast Salish homeland. The Suquamish, Duwamish, Muckleshoot, Puyallup, Nisqually, Squaxin Island, Stillaguamish, Tulalip, Lummi, and many other Coast Salish nations are the original peoples; treaty fishing rights and ongoing land-back work define much of the contemporary water politics.

Stub status

Expand as Puget Sound listings accumulate: deeper Coast Salish history and contemporary tribal-led [[food-sovereignty|food sovereignty]] work, the Skagit Valley as agricultural anchor north of Seattle, salmon-recovery work (Long Live the Kings, the Nisqually River Foundation), and the institutional ecosystem (PCC Community Markets cooperative, Pike Place Market).
