Promised Land State Park

A 3,000-acre Pennsylvania state park in Pike County on top of the Pocono Plateau, at 1,800 feet elevation. The park sits in a CCC-era acquisition completed in 1945 and centers on Promised Land Lake (422 acres) and Lower Lake (173 acres). The high elevation produces a distinctly cool, boreal-affinity ecology — black spruce, balsam fir, and tamarack appear at the edges of the park's wetlands, well south of their typical range. Surrounded by 12,000 acres of Delaware State Forest, creating one of the largest contiguous protected blocks in the southern half of the Poconos.
What it is
Promised Land was named by 18th-century Shakers who saw the plateau ground and called it (without irony) the promised land. [[poconos|Pennsylvania]] acquired the original tract in 1902–1905, making it one of the oldest state parks in the system. The CCC built the park infrastructure in the 1930s.
