A low, evergreen, sprawling shrub of acid bogs and fen margins across the boreal and northern temperate zones of the northern hemisphere. The dominant low shrub on most North American sphagnum bogs — usually the species you walk between if you walk a bog edge. Leaves are leathery, dull green above, rusty-scaly beneath, and persist through winter. White urn-shaped flowers in early spring, on horizontal racemes from the previous year's growth. Pocono kettle bogs hold leatherleaf across the open mat in continuous low cover; it is the most reliable visual signature of an open bog community in the bioregion.

Form. Sprawling shrub 1–4 ft tall, often forming continuous low cover. Stems slender, woody, branching, growing through and over [[sphagnum-moss|sphagnum]]. Leaves alternate, oblong, ½–2 inches, leathery, dull dark green above with a slight downward curl, rusty-scaly underneath. The leaves persist year-round.
Flowers. Urn-shaped, white, 4–7 mm long, in one-sided racemes from the previous year’s branch tips. Bloom early spring, often before bog ice fully retreats. Pollinated by bees emerging in the cool peatland microclimate.
Fruit. Dry capsule, persistent on the plant; not eaten by wildlife.

Acidic, low-nutrient, saturated substrates: [[sphagnum-moss|sphagnum]] bog mats, fen margins, peat-soil seeps, occasionally acid pond shores. Tolerates the most extreme bog conditions — pH 3.5–4.5, very low nitrogen, permanent waterlogging.

The leaves contain andromedotoxin (the same compound that makes laurel-honey toxic) and are not used as tea or food. Indigenous use was limited; the plant served primarily as bog-substrate marker in seasonal travel through peatlands.
The genus name Chamaedaphne is from Greek for “ground laurel” — a reference to leaf shape, not chemistry. The folk name cassandra (sometimes cassandra calyculata) is a 19th-century botanical reference and survives in older floras.
