Concept

Poultry Farm

Also known as: egg farm, chicken farm, duck farm, pastured-poultry operation

A farm whose primary production is birds — chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys, quail, guinea fowl — for eggs, meat, or both. Poultry sits between vegetable farming and livestock in time horizon: birds mature fast (8 weeks to a broiler, 5 months to a laying hen), the operation can be small and modular, and the regulatory floor for direct-to-eater sales is friendlier than for red meat in most states. Pastured-poultry is among the densest farm-economic models for small acreage.

A poultry farm raises birds. The directory‘s poultry entries are dominated by small-flock egg operations and pastured-broiler farms — the kind of operation a single family can run on five acres without industrial infrastructure.

What the directory tracks here

Laying hens (eggs), broiler chickens (meat), heritage chicken breeds, ducks (eggs and meat), geese, turkeys (heritage breeds especially weighted), quail, guinea fowl, Cornish-cross broilers, slow-grow broilers, capons.

Pastured, free-range, mobile-coop, and integrated rotational-grazing operations are weighted. Caged-layer and confined-broiler operations do not appear in the directory.
