A perennial carnivorous plant of acid sphagnum bogs, fens, and peatlands across most of the eastern half of North America. The widest natural distribution of any pitcher plant species — Labrador and the Northwest Territories south to the Gulf Coast. Leaves form upright tubular pitchers that hold rainwater and digestive enzymes; insects fall in, drown, and are digested over weeks by the plant's microbial community. The Pocono kettle bogs hold one of the densest populations of *Sarracenia purpurea* in the mid-Atlantic — a distinctive feature visible from the Tannersville boardwalk and at most plateau peatlands.

The genus Sarracenia is endemic to North America. S. purpurea is the most widespread of the eight species and the only one that reaches well into Canada.
