Pin Point was founded in 1898 by formerly-enslaved African Americans from Ossabaw Island and the surrounding Skidaway and Green Islands, who relocated to a small mainland tract south of Savannah after the post-Reconstruction collapse of the [[sea-islands|Sea Islands]] plantation economy made island life economically untenable. The community established itself around the local seafood-processing economy: the Varn & Son Oyster and Crab Factory operated from the 1920s through the late 1980s as the community’s principal employer, processing crab and oyster from the surrounding tidal-creek and Vernon River fisheries.
The Pin Point Heritage Museum opened in 2011 in the former Varn & Son building.
