Open Source Seed Initiative

Also known as: OSSI

A nonprofit, founded in 2014 by plant breeders, farmers, and seed-system advocates, that releases new plant varieties under an OSSI Pledge committing the variety and any derivatives to the seed commons in perpetuity. Modeled on open-source software licensing (GPL, copyleft principles), the Pledge is a moral and legal commitment that the seeds will not be patented, copyrighted, or otherwise restricted from use, breeding, or sharing. As of 2024, the OSSI catalog contains 100+ varieties from dozens of breeders, with new releases each year. The most-developed institutional alternative to corporate-controlled plant breeding.

The OSSI Pledge

The OSSI Pledge is short:

You have the freedom to use these OSSI-Pledged seeds in any way you choose. In return, you pledge not to restrict others’ use of these seeds or their derivatives by patents or other means, and to include this Pledge with any transfer of these seeds or their derivatives.

The Pledge mirrors the GNU General Public License’s copyleft principle in software. Once a seed is released under the OSSI Pledge, it (and any variety bred from it) must remain freely available — anyone can plant it, breed with it, save its seeds, sell those seeds — but no one can lock it down with patents or restrict-use contracts.

Origins

OSSI emerged from conversations among public-sector plant breeders, farmers, and seed-system advocates in the late 2000s and early 2010s, as the trajectory of corporate seed consolidation and plant-variety patents made the loss of public-domain seed increasingly visible.
