The three northeasternmost counties of Vermont — Essex, Orleans, and Caledonia — sitting on the Green Mountain spine where it meets the Northern Forest. Dairy-heritage country at the boreal edge: long winters, short summers, glacial soils, Lake Memphremagog spanning the Canadian border. The least-populous and most-forested part of Vermont, where the relationship between farm and forest is unusually intact.

What’s distinctive
- Boreal edge. Three counties at the latitude where the temperate hardwood forest gives way to the spruce-fir Northern Forest. Sugar maples still dominate the lower slopes, but red spruce and balsam fir take over above ~2,000 feet.
