Mixed Farm

Also known as: diversified farm, polyculture farm, integrated farm

A farm with no single dominant product — orchard plus vegetables, livestock plus grain, dairy plus poultry, market garden plus apiary. Diversification is the historical default of small farming and the directory's editorial preference: a mixed farm is more resilient to weather, market shocks, and pest pressure than a monoculture; it cycles nutrients across enterprises; it employs the operator across more of the year. The directory uses `mixed-farm` as the primary classification for any operation whose product spread is intentionally diversified rather than overlapping with another sub-type.

A mixed farm doesn’t fit cleanly into orchard, vineyard, vegetable, grain, dairy, livestock, or poultry — it spans several.
