Mississippi Delta

Also known as: Lower Mississippi Delta, Mississippi Alluvial Plain, Delta

The 200-mile alluvial plain along the lower Mississippi River — one of the most fertile and most contested agricultural landscapes in North America, the cultural homeland of the Delta blues, and the post-Reconstruction site of the most intensive Black agricultural cooperative organizing of the 20th century (Federation of Southern Cooperatives, Mississippi Freedom Farm Cooperative). Plantation-era monocrop cotton has yielded to industrial soy/corn but small-farm and Indigenous food-sovereignty work continues. The directory's Mississippi Delta anchor is Magnolia Grove Monastery in Batesville — the U.S. southern monastic-practice center in the Plum Village (Thich Nhat Hanh) tradition.
