Lower Susquehanna

Also known as: Susquehanna Valley, Lancaster County Piedmont

The lower Susquehanna River valley below Harrisburg, draining the south-central Pennsylvania piedmont and limestone valleys into the Chesapeake Bay. Some of the most productive agricultural soil in the eastern United States — Lancaster County alone consistently ranks as the most productive non-irrigated farmland nationally. Long Plain-sect agricultural identity (Amish, Mennonite, Brethren) alongside a deepening native-plant nursery cluster. Watershed flows to the Chesapeake; cultural orientation is split between Philadelphia and Baltimore.
