The northern-Ohio shoreline of Lake Erie — Cleveland, Toledo, and Sandusky anchor the metro pattern, with the rich agricultural lowlands of Lucas, Ottawa, Sandusky, and Erie counties between them. The lake-effect microclimate supports orchard country (grapes, peaches, apples), and the alluvial Black Swamp soils — once a vast wetland, now drained and farmed — produce some of the highest-yielding corn-soy-vegetable acreage in the Midwest.
