L'Atelier Paysan

A French farmer-led cooperative founded in 2014 (formalizing earlier work from 2009) that designs, documents, and trains farmers to build their own agricultural tools — bicycle-powered cultivators, manual transplanters, walk-behind tractors, modified two-wheel tractors. All designs are released under open-source licenses with full plans, materials lists, and weekend-format build training. L'Atelier Paysan is the most-developed European open-source farming-tools project and a foundational reference for the broader open-ag-tools movement worldwide. The name translates roughly as *peasant workshop* — naming the tradition the project draws from.

L’Atelier Paysan is a Société coopérative d’intérêt collectif (SCIC) — a French cooperative business form for projects of collective interest. Membership includes farmers, engineers, blacksmiths, researchers, and supporters. The cooperative:

Designs farm tools — typically by working with farmers facing a specific problem [[the-market|the market]] does not serve
Documents designs — full plans, materials, build sequences released openly online
Trains farmers to build — multi-day workshops where farmers assemble the tools themselves with the cooperative’s facilitation
Sells some hardware — for farmers who want a tool but cannot attend a build workshop
