FarmOS

Also known as: farmOS

An open-source, web-based farm management application for record-keeping, planning, and asset tracking — built on Drupal and released under a free software license. Used by working farms, agricultural research stations, and educational institutions worldwide. Tracks plantings, harvests, animal events, soil tests, observations, and equipment use against a map-based view of farm assets. FarmOS is the most-developed open-source alternative to proprietary farm-management systems (FarmLogs, Granular, John Deere Operations Center) and one of the principal software anchors of the open-agriculture movement.

What it is

FarmOS is a free, open-source farm management application. Self-hosted or available through hosted plans (Farmier and others). The principal use cases:

Record-keeping — plantings, harvests, animal events, observations, soil tests, equipment maintenance
Planning — crop rotations, planting schedules, field assignments
Mapping — geospatial view of farm assets, fields, beds, structures, sensors
Compliance — produces records for organic certification, food safety audits, research
API access — sensors and other systems can write data directly via the REST/JSON-API

Why it matters

Most working farms have moved their records to proprietary software whose data structures, retention, and exports the farmer does not control. FarmOS keeps the records the farmer’s; the software runs on infrastructure the farmer can audit, modify, and extend. For a regenerative or research farm whose practices are evolving year to year, the ability to add custom fields, custom asset types, and custom workflows is essential.
